Every teenager is unsure of their abilities and interests and usually cannot decide between two or more fields of study they want to immerse in their future. Hence, making this decision, I prioritize some activities over others, which determines my personality.Ī more complex example is definitely the choice of study specialization. The time with friends can probably be more enjoyable than the time devoted to doing homework, but their benefits also differ. The distribution of the time between study, sport, and leisure time is also a hard choice to make. Another example can be about the time-management of a day. It is the obvious example of small hard choices that everyone needs to make in daily life, but at the same time, which allows us to look deeper into ourselves. As a result, I buy the one that helps me express myself better. One T-Shirt has better color, but the other one fits me better. When I go shopping and cannot understand which T-Shirt I should buy, I face the choice. As there is no possibility to make a rational decision, the only reasons for choosing one option over another are inside us and not in the external world.Īlmost every decision in my life can be related to this video. Lastly, the strongest argument in favor of the usefulness of such choices is that they allow people to understand themselves better (Chang 11:30). As not everything can be represented in numbers, there is no surprise that it is not always feasible to compare and contrast two alternatives. Secondly, the reasons for the choices being complicated lie not in our ignorance but in the values, we need to compare (Chang 2:15). Hence, if it is possible to make some small decisions, then it is easier to take significant actions. Firstly, it is vital to understand that hard choices are not only about the big decisions, such as the future job, but also about the trivial things like what to have for breakfast (Chang 1:35). However, it is not only the culmination that matters in this talk but the overall considerations and the arguments. Whereas the standard way of thinking about the hard choices is that it is a curse, she comes to the conclusion that it is instead “a godsend” (Chang 14:20). And so a world of easy choices would actually enslave us to reason. And when we create reason we become the person who we really are and the author of our own lives.Īlternatively, a clear and simple choice would lead to there being little thought being put into a decision because reasons are obvious. If the options are on a par, then we create the reasons to do what we do. That there are only 3 outcomes, better, worse or equal.īut Ruth encourages us to think of a fourth alternative. When weighing up hard choices, we do this from a very science drive place. Someone who allows the world to write the story of their lives. In doing so we become a ‘drifter’ as Ruth terms it. So often we take what seams the be the safest option. There is the fear of the unknown, and of being ‘wrong’. We weigh things up, we agonise over them, do the pro’s and con’s and at the end of the day each option is equally as good as the other. And that they are hard because there is no best option. But Ruth highlights that small choices can be just as hard. In our minds, big choices are often equated to being hard choices. It’s where we get to stand behind our reasons and say, “this is who I am”. But what is the significance of that? And why is it so powerful? That being that we all have the ability to create reason.

Ruth Chang’s engaging TED talk on hard choices helps to uncover a hidden power that we all have.
