It is a little janky in the controls and not well explained and how things work in general isn't explained the best, you really have to try things and learn as you go, which may or may not be something you like. If you want your face eaten off by a mosquito it's great. If you want a run from a giant Troll screaming OMG No not again, it's great. If you want to build a viking ship and sail the seas it's great. If you like exploring worlds that are different each time you play, it's great. If you like survival base building type games it's great. The maps are amazing, the building is amazing, I have spent more time running back to my body than I care to admit because I underestimated the complexity of the game. It starts off pretty easy and I underestimated it in the starting zone, then I moved to the Black Forest Biome and shit got real. I have hundreds of hours in the Long Dark, Fallout 4 (for the settlement building with mods), Rust, Ark, Sims, Subnautica etc so I went in cynical as heck as there are a lot of crap games out there trying to be the next Minecraft. OK I am a survival/base building game addict. What games have you played that you were really sad to leave? I had such a wonderful time with this game and will soon be starting The Outer Wilds hoping for a similar experience. We were genuinely a bit teary-eyed when we entered the rocket and created our time capsule, seeing everything from the platform we'd built in our time there. I played most of it with my sons (8 & 10) and they were just as rivieted as I was. Amazingly, the horrible pop-in, framerate stutters and couple of crashes didn't hamper my enjoyment one bit. The drip of story in the background was perfect and there were so many moments of OMG, what is that?! The lack of hand-holding was a bonus for a Souls-fan like me. I'd never really played a survival game before (except a bit of Conan: Exiles) but the gameplay loop was immensely satisfying and kept me pushing on to explore further and deeper. I was NOT expecting it to draw me in like it did. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games ListĪnd that's coming from a 45 year old gaming since 1982! I didn't know much about it when I bought it, but it got great reviews and looked interesting.
